The eye is an intricate part of your body that is also vulnerable to several debilitating conditions. Glaucoma is a subtle disease that can sneak up on you in the most unsuspecting way. It occurs due to an increased pressure on the eye’s optic nerve, which transmits images to the brain, and has the potential to ultimately cause permanent blindness.

What is Glaucoma?

There are 5 major types of glaucoma, but the most common type is “primary open-angle” glaucoma. This type usually occurs when eye fluid (aqueous humor) isn’t circulating and draining properly. Extra fluid buildup causes the natural pressure in your eye (intraocular pressure) to increase, which causes damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for sending signals to the brain, so as damage to this major nerve increases, so does eye sight loss.
